Everything Homeowners Need to Know About Water Softeners

A no-nonsense guide for North Texas homeowners. What hard water is, how to tell if you have it, and what a softener can \u2014 and can't \u2014 do for your home.

What is hard water?

Hard water is simply water with a high concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium. As rainwater seeps through North Texas limestone and rock, it picks up minerals. The harder the water, the more buildup, scale, and soap-scum you'll see in your home.

How hard is Dallas water?

Most of DFW falls in the moderately hard to very hard range, typically 7 to 11 grains per gallon. Some neighborhoods test even higher. Hardness varies a little by source and season.

Signs you have hard water

  • White spots on glassware and shower doors
  • Scale buildup around faucets, showerheads, and inside kettles
  • Dry, itchy skin or dull-feeling hair
  • Laundry that feels stiff or looks dingy
  • Appliances wearing out faster than they should

What a water softener does

A softener exchanges hardness minerals for tiny amounts of sodium using a resin bed. Water that exits the softener no longer leaves scale, rinses better, and feels noticeably different on your skin.

What a softener does NOT do

Softeners don't remove chlorine, chloramine, sediment, PFAS, lead, or most contaminants. That's the job of filtration (whole-home) and reverse osmosis (drinking water). Many DFW homes benefit from a softener and a filter — they solve different problems.
